Next up, July 22, 7pm

We had a great time knitting!  And raised $65 for Tiggy's House!  The second class is scheduled for July 22 at 7pm.  We'll learn to pearl, cast off and follow some basic pattern instructions.  If you already know how to cast on and knit, it would be no problem to jump in now.  Just let me know.  Also, given a class my husband and I are taking 2 nights a week for a stretch, my other evenings are rather booked up.  If you can't make it to the 7/22 class, please let me know.  I'll find a time that will work for both of us and I can give a private lesson.  Hope to see everyone there!

Alternate Date

I've scheduled an alternate date/time for the first knitting class.  Both dates will go through the same things.  The 2nd class is primarily for those who can't make it to the first class.  As before, please let me know if you're coming so I can be prepared.

I don't have time to knit!

If you've ever said that, read on.

Knitting (and crocheting) is the best do-anywhere craft.  Below are my (or my friends) favorite times to knit:

1) In the car (while someone else is driving).  Even a 5 minute drive is enough to get a few rows done.  I made Christmas stocking and hats purely from Sunday drives to and from church.

2) In front of the tv: once you're good, you don't have to look at your hands all that intensely.  You will easily be able to both knit and have your brain and eyes available to multi-task.

3) Waiting for appointments: keeping you current knitting project in a bag, ready to go means its easy to throw it into the car when you're on your way to something that might tie up your time.  Remember, just a few minutes is enough knock out a few rows.

4) While homeschooling: sometimes kids need frequent help so you need to sit close by ready to assist.  It would be a great use of time to knit some stitches, answer a question, knit a few more stitches.

5) In labor:  Got a baby coming?  I don't wish anyone to have to labor as long as I do, but I managed to make 2 new hats for Farmer Boy 2 all between contractions as we built up to transition.

6) Middle of the night: knitting is a quiet, calming craft.  I frequently wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep.  I grab my knitting bag and go to different room where a little light won't bother anyone.  I can knit away while the rest of the house sleeps and soon I'm sleepy again too.

7) When kids are playing:  Kids love playgrounds.  I can knit while keeping an eye on them and even stop wherever I am in the pattern to push a little one on the swings for a bit.

Where do you think you could squeeze a few rows into your day?

Our First Class!

Here we go!!!  Our first knitting class will be held on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 7pm.  I assume it will be at my house so if you don't know where that is, please e-mail me (FLhomesteader*at*jesusanswers*dot*com) who you are, where you're from, and how you found out about us and I'll respond.

Even if you know me very well, please let me know if you're planning on coming.  If we have too many people, I'll find a bigger room for us and I'll need to know who to alert.

We will learn:
1) Casting on
2) The basic knit stitch
3) Binding off

If you're unable to make it to this class, I can try to hold a private lesson for you or you can catch up on your own through youtube videos.  The knit witch has a series of videos that I think are the best out there.  You will learn enough to make dish rags, a scarf or even a blanket if you have amazing patience.

If you are coming, please bring:
1) a pair of standard knitting needles.  If you don't have any, I suggest buying size 8 as they seem to be the most used.
2) a ball of yarn, any kind.
3) $10 suggested donation.  This is a suggestion.  Please don't stay home because you can only afford $2, but please do give something toward Tiggy's House.

Please forward this info on far and wide!  Ask your friends if they're interested in learning to knit.  Lots of people are and it will be a fun time of learning.  How could it not be fun with a bunch of ladies gathering around with knitting needles???  Just like 200 years ago!  Not to say men can't come... I just don't really expect any to.  And if you're not sure you want to knit, just come to try out my zucchini brownies!  See you then!

The Beginning

Just how much back story is necessary to get a group of people together to knit?  I'm not sure so I'll start a while ago... over a year ago, but I'm not sure how far back.  It all started when I stumbled upon this neat little blog at Roscommon Acres
Dana was a homeschooling mom, starting out a new homesteading life with her husband and 6 children (1 en utero at the time) and living much as I do.  Daily life entailed much of what my life entailed.  That's hard to come by and I was hooked.  I loved her blog.  I rejoiced having a "friend like me."

But tragedy struck in December of 2010 when one of those precious children, Tiggy, was suddenly taken from this world.  I couldn't look at my own little boys (one a little older than Tiggy and one a little younger) without thinking of Dana and her loss.  She asked that all memorial monies go to Tiny Hands International so that children who have never known the love that Tiggy knew in his short life, could at least have safety, security, and yes, even love.

And now the whole tribe at Roscommon Acres is doing something BIG.  It sounds to me like Tiggy lived life in a big way, so its only proper that he be equally remembered.  They are going to raise $50,000 to build a much needed facility for needy children in Nepal.  It will be part of Tiny Hands International's Dream Center.  But these funds need to be raised in 2 years.

This is where this blog comes in.

I will be hosting knitting and crocheting classes to teach knitters, crocheters and wannabes of various levels to make some really neat crafts.  Those creations made can then be auctioned off through Bidding for Good to bring in yet more donations.  We may even get some yarn and/or craft supply stores to support it too.

And make sure you keep tabs with Dana's blog for Tiggy's House also as she lists other fundraising events and activities keeps the total tally going to see how we're doing with it all.
